A language model will produce fluent, confident environmental claims with no idea whether anything behind them is true, which is the fastest way in the world to create an unsubstantiated claim. It can help you describe what you have measured, structure a document, and tell you what evidence a claim would require. The wording comes after the evidence, never before it.

Directive (EU) 2024/825 starts to apply, amending the Unfair Commercial Practices Directive. Generic environmental claims — wording like eco-friendly, climate neutral or biodegradable — become prohibited unless substantiated by recognised, relevant environmental performance. Claims about future performance need clear, verifiable commitments with measurable targets and independent verification, and sustainability labels must be certified or issued by public bodies. The deadline is European, but the direction is not. Regulators across several jurisdictions have moved the same way, and the underlying discipline — evidence before wording, method disclosed, precision matching confidence — is what makes any claim defensible anywhere. If you do sell into the EU, day 15 is urgent rather than useful.
